Part-Time Custodial/Assistant Maintenance Position











12 month/226 days preferred

REPORTS TO:   Superintendent 


Contribute to the operation of the educational process by maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and a high standard of safety and neatness of grounds.



Education/Certification: High School Diploma preferred.


Special Knowledge/Skills:

Be physically able to perform the required duties

Be capable of following oral and written instructions

Know the basic techniques of building cleaning and maintenance and minor repairs. 

Building and grounds maintenance knowledge is not essential but preferred.

Be able to work in and contribute to a positive working environment with teachers, students and parents.

Ability to obtain CDL Drivers Licence is preferred. 




  • Develop and maintain a cleaning schedule that will include the cleaning of floors, windows, furniture, and equipment and removal of trash as delegated. 
  • Be responsible for keeping buildings and grounds, including hallways, classrooms, public areas, bathrooms, sidewalks, and play areas neat and clean.
  • Maintain a program of preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff.
  • Make observations of safety hazards.
  • Report promptly to the superintendent or principal any acts of vandalism, accidental destruction, or defects that may prove injurious to students and staff.
  • Assume the responsibility for opening and/or closing the building each school day, dependent on the position’s working hours. 
  • Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Be responsible for custodian duties when assigned to the building for extracurricular activities.
  • Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Comply with local and District laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash.
  • Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repairs needed to the superintendent and maintenance director
  • Help maintain the lawn, shrubbery, and playground as delegated. 
  • Help maintain the gym or other facilities as delegated. 
  • Assist maintenance director as needed.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment and order additional supplies as needed.
  • Make recommendations for replacement of existing equipment as it becomes obsolete or deteriorates.
  • Move furniture or equipment within the building as directed by the superintendent or principal.
  • Attend inservice trainings and other appropriate meetings.
  • Check school email account and other means of school communication regularly.
  • Work positively and cooperatively with other school employees, students, parents, and visitors. 
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
  • Be dedicated to help create the best learning environment possible for our students, staff, parents, and visitors. 




Experience:  One year of experience preferred. 



WORKING CONDITIONS: Mostly inside, but some duties may be outside depending on responsibilities assigned  based on employees skills. 


Mental Demands: Most duties will be routine, but periodically duties may be higher stress due to preparing for special events or special maintenance or cleaning needs. 


Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Lifting of items of up to 20 pounds or more. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Able to maintain a productive, study pace to accomplish job goals. 


Pay: Dependent on Experience.

Work Schedule: 20-25 hours a week.  Negotiable but prefer 4-5 hours a day in the afternoon on school days (for example, 12:00-5:00). Summer hours would be flexible but prefer 8:00-2:00.
