Job Title: District Librarian/Research Specialist.                                                              Exemption Status:  Exempt/Admin

Reports to:  Assistant Superintendent                                                                            Education Dept./School:  Districtwide

Collaborates with: Principals, Staff, Instructional Coaches, Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent

Job Summary:

The District Librarian/Research Specialist will provide exceptional library services to students, staff, and the broader school community. This role is vital to fostering a love of reading and learning while promoting the use of library resources to support curriculum goals, research goals and student development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Library Management:
    • Oversee the daily operations of the school library, ensuring it is organized, accessible, and well-maintained.
    • Develop and maintain a library collection that supports the educational goals of the district and aligns with state standards and curriculum.
    • Manage library budgets, purchasing materials, and resources within allocated funds.
  • Instructional Support:
    • Collaborate with teachers and administrators to integrate library resources and services into the curriculum.
    • Provide instruction to students on library use, research skills, information literacy, and digital citizenship.
    • Plan and deliver individual and group instruction on various aspects of research, reading, and technology.
    • Work with students to develop not only an understanding of research, but also a dedication to utilizing research well.
  • Reading Promotion:
    • Foster a positive reading culture by organizing book clubs, author visits, reading challenges, and other literacy-promoting activities.
    • Select and recommend age-appropriate reading materials to encourage independent reading and academic success.
  • Technology Integration:
    • Support the integration of technology into the learning process by promoting digital tools, educational software, and online resources.
    • Provide instruction and guidance on the responsible use of technology, including internet safety and proper citation practices.
  • Research Support: 
    • Assist students with learning the skills required to conduct the research required for student research and capstone projects, as well as academic projects required for secondary, dual-credit, and post-secondary research.
    • Develop programs to meet research standards for student body.
  • Counseling Support:
    • Support students participating in Dual Credit and PTECH programs.
    • Help guide students through the enrollment process, ensuring they meet eligibility requirements and understand the benefits of earning college credits while in high school.
    • Offer resources for academic success, and provide support to help balance the demands of high school and college coursework.
  • Student Support:
    • Assist students with research, reading choices, and homework support.
    • Develop programs to meet the specific learning needs of students, including those who may require additional support.
  • Professional Development:
    • Stay current with developments in library science, education technology, and relevant trends.
    • Participate in district and state-level professional development opportunities and collaborate with other library professionals.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • A Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) or a related field from an accredited program is preferred.
    • Texas School Librarian Certification or eligibility for certification required.
  • Experience:
    • At least 1-2 years of experience as a librarian or in a related educational role
    • Experience in a K-12 public school setting
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
    • Ability to use library management software and digital tools effectively.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to collaborate with teachers, staff, and the community to support student learning.
    • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and equitable environment for all students.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, and reaching to organize and shelve books.
